I have just finished reading a book called “Orwell on Truth” (2017). It was timely published in the first year of Trump’s first administration. It was a brief collection of George Orwell’s quotes from his writings many of which brought us a keen awareness of lies, fake news, control of the information, and fear of the same trap today as seen in “Nineteen Eighty-Four.”
It is remarkable to find his essays and his awareness of freedom taken away and truth confused seem to be so realistic and vividly felt in a current political situation in the U.S. and the rest of the world. As Orwellian fears have been mentioned quite often these days, I think it is very important to pay extra attention of keeping the freedom of Press alive and to keep ourselves, of course myself included, constantly educated and engaged in any forms of activism, either active or passive, to do every thing to avoid the trap of 1984.
There were many quotes introduced in this book. Following are a couple of quotes. I think it is worthwhile to mention here for me to remember.
- Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four.
- The Imagination, like certain wild animals, will not breed in captivity.
Orwell’s “unique clarity of thought and illuminating skepticism,” as its book cover says, “provide the perfect defense against our post-truth world o f fake news and confusion.”
